Hubie Sounds 136 - Tunes Of The Year

Hi everyone.

It’s that time of the year when everyone gets together and celebrates stuff. Tonight on NSB Radio I’m going to ignore the seasonal stuff and instead celebrate my favourite tunes of 2017. So I’ve gone through each of my shows of the last twelve months and selected the best beats that I can squeeze into two hours of live radio.

Hubie Sounds 136 – Tunes Of The Year – Tuesday 12th December @ 9pm GMT – live and direct on NSB Radio!

Make sure you come and say ho-ho-holla in the NSB Radio Chatroom.

Hubie Sounds 130

Hi everyone.

After my trip down breakbeat memory lane last time, I thought I’d look in the opposite direction for this week’s show. This time around I’m going to showcase some ‘alternative’ breaks tunes from more recent, contemporary times, including some brand spanking new music that’s fresh off the digital presses!

If, like me, you’ve been enjoying the recent output from bass-friendly labels such as Dirtybird, Punks, Perfect Driver, Anabatic, Cuff, and that sort of thing, then you’re gonna love this show.

Hubie Sounds 130 – Tuesday 11th July @ 9pm BST – live and direct on NSB Radio!

Ez crew.

Tonight on Hubie Sounds I’m going to dig through my crates of classic choons for a bit of an old skool nu-skool breaks retrospective. It’s been a while since I’ve blown off the cobwebs and spun some good old fashioned breakbeat so I’m looking forward to it. I’m sure all you breakers out there are gonna love this show too.

HUBIE SOUNDS on air this tuesday

27 September, 2010

Greetings peeps.

Brrr it’s a bit chilly innit. Never fear, for Hubie Sounds is back on air this Tuesday night and we’ll be doing our best to warm your cockles. This week we have an excellent guest mix from Big Square Records head honcho and all round diamond cross-dresser Big Nick D (or Nicola Double D to some of his closer friends). Long time Hubie Sounds fans may remember Nick’s previous guest mix from a year or so ago and it was a techy barnstormer of a mix. Well you can expect more of the same this time around – it certainly is a mix to get you up out of your seats and boogying around your bedroom.

We’ve also got the usual selection of banging beats and funky vibes in store, including new tunes by Krafty Kuts, NAPT, Herve, Pimpsoul and much more!

Make sure you tune in to Hubie Sounds this Tuesday, 28th September @ 9pm UK time – live and direct on NSB Radio!

HUBIE SOUNDS 017 rescheduled!

13 September, 2010

Hey everyone

Many apologies for the relative silence here in Hubie Sounds land of late. And also many apologies for the no show on the 24th of August. Those pesky gremlins were back with a vengeance and decided to throw a rave of mischief in my broadcast computer.

Anyway, the critters have now been evicted and their soundsystem and various dubious recreational substances confiscated, so Hubie Sounds will be back in action this Tuesday night. And for those of you who had hoped to enter the Hybrid competition last time around, you will have your chance to enter on this show tomorrow night. Just in case you missed the details about the competition, you can find it all here

As advertised last time, as well as the usual selection of fresh new tunes, we’re pleased to welcome back the Hubie Loves… feature, where this time we’ll be focusing on the Australian troubadours of tech funk, The Loops Of Fury.

HUBIE SOUNDS with special guests Curl And Dean

24 May, 2010

Hey everyone!

Hubie Sounds is back on the interweb airwaves this Tuesday. This time around, as well as the usual selection of hot new joints and stone cold classics, we’ve got an exclusive guest mix from essex-based breakbeateers Curl And Dean. Here’s all you need to know about the dynamic duo…

Curl & Dean grew up in different parts of Essex immersed in hip hop culture, spraying walls & spitting into mics in the long hot summers of their youth. It was after the dungaree & floppy hat raves of ’89 that Curl bought his first keyboard, soon adding a 707 & 950 sampler, he started to PA to the ‘hands in the air’ rave circuit.

Meanwhile, Deano Bobalino (Boba), with his love for hip hop beats, started to learn the art of DJing, getting his first pair of decks as an xmas present at the age of 15. It was not long before he started to DJ & MC on the local pirate radio stations before throwing himself into the ‘hardcore you know the score’ rave scene.

After several releases on his own progressive label, Curl was introduced to Boba, who at the time was a member of the breakbeat band Axcess, which lead to a remix courtesy of Axcess for his label ‘Free for a Girl’. However, it was during a summer break in Ibiza, that Curl, with his early house and progressive background was introduced by Boba to the sound of breaks. This introduction convinced them – whilst supping yet another cold San Miguel on their inflatable shark lilos – to blend their musical production styles, thus creating the Curl & Dean Sound.

Shortly thereafter, Big Square Records head-bearded-honcho (and one-time Hubie Sounds guest DJ) Big Nick D asked the lads to remix a Ben & Lex tune ‘Floorburn’, this was followed by a further release of their own ‘Kabul’ which featured an excellent Merka Remix on the flip. The original was also licensed on the V2 released compilation LP ‘Urban Deluxe’.

Their follow-up release was the rolling sounds of the ‘Snow Buddha’, also released on Big Square Records with remixes from Future Funk Squad & MI Loki. The success of the ‘Buddha was literally measured in inches, causing the snow to fall all over the U.K from release, this little beauty earned a number 1 spot in the DJ Download Beats & Breaks Chart, a DJ magazine recommendation & support from many, including Jay Cunning’s Kiss FM show.

The lads also had a tune, ‘Shining Path’, featured on the NSB Uncovered compilation, released towards the end of ’09 on Ape Records. As well as throwing their own parties around London town, Curl & Dean present their own radio show on IBreaks Radio. Their next release, ‘Bantha’ is out soon on Scarcity, with remixes from Beta, Run Riot, Mesmer, Deriwer & Ruido, the lads also have some remixes due for release soon on Scarcity and Yellow Finger.

HUBIE SOUNDS with special guests the 101 connection

10 May, 2010

Yo peeps.

Hubie Sounds is back on the air this Tuesday night with a special guest mix from Basingstoke-based funksters The 101 Connection. Alex Swann, who is one half of the ‘Connection,  has put together a cracking warm up style mix full of crisp breakbeats and toasty basslines. For more info about Al and his partner in crime Neil, please read on…

Al began DJing in 2002 and co-presented a show on NSB Radio for 3 years under “The Deckwreckers” guise, before Nelson brought his brand of hip-hop, funk and nuskool breaks to the table, joining forces with Al just over 3 years ago. The pair went on to win the “Battle of the DJs” DJ competiton hosted by the Funky End Bar in Aldershot later that year, which resulted in the launch of monthly residency ‘Fractured Funk’ which is now into its 4th year and still going strong.

Their vibe is very much on a breaks tip: expect big synths, and chunky basslines – but they’re also partial to nu-funk and some electro business depending on when/where….

Gig highlights have included appearances at Ministry of Sound, Slinky – The Opera House, Herbal, and The Double X Festival in Slovakia, plus regular appearances on the dance stage at Guilfest Fesitval in the past 3 years. During this time sharing the line up with DJs such as The Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, Atomic Hooligan, A-Skillz and Pendulum.

2010 has been going very well so far for the lads. Of late they’ve been teaming up with the Thump crew who are a great bunch of lads really pushing the breaks thing locally. Al & Neil’s night seems to be on the up too – running a breaks night outside london has always been a massive challenge but a bit of careful education seems to be finally paying off 😉 Lots of dates to look forward to this summer.

For more info, including where you can see the lads playing next, make sure you check out their website: www.the101connection.com

And of course we will also be spinning plenty of fresh new tuna, including new material by The Chemical Brothers, The Rogue Element, Nick Thayer, Deekline & Tim Healey, 2 Bit Thugs and much more!

Make sure you check out Hubie Sounds, this Tuesday 11th May @ 9pm UK time – live & direct on NSB Radio!
