Hi everyone.
This week on NSB Radio I’m reviving my Label Showcase feature with a focus on German-based This Ain’t Bristol, by far one of my favourite labels at the moment.
Sharing musical DNA with labels such as Dirtybird and Perfect Driver, This Ain’t Bristol is a collective that’s currently tearing up the global bass music and dirty house scene. Having recently released their 25th joint in the form of the excellent Celebrations compilation, these guys are hitting huge heights for such a relatively young label.
On tonight’s show I will be showcasing This Ain’t Bristol with a selection of my favourite tunes from their catalogue, alongside my usual bunch of fresh beats and classics from the realms of funk, soul, hip hop, house, breaks and more.
Hubie Sounds 132 – Tuesday 8th August @ 9pm BST – live and direct on NSB Radio!
Make sure you join in the fun and games in the NSB Radio Chatroom.

Hey everyone!
Hubie Sounds is back on the interweb airwaves this Tuesday. This time around, as well as the usual selection of hot new joints and stone cold classics, we’ve got an exclusive guest mix from essex-based breakbeateers Curl And Dean. Here’s all you need to know about the dynamic duo…
Curl & Dean grew up in different parts of Essex immersed in hip hop culture, spraying walls & spitting into mics in the long hot summers of their youth. It was after the dungaree & floppy hat raves of ’89 that Curl bought his first keyboard, soon adding a 707 & 950 sampler, he started to PA to the ‘hands in the air’ rave circuit.
Meanwhile, Deano Bobalino (Boba), with his love for hip hop beats, started to learn the art of DJing, getting his first pair of decks as an xmas present at the age of 15. It was not long before he started to DJ & MC on the local pirate radio stations before throwing himself into the ‘hardcore you know the score’ rave scene.
After several releases on his own progressive label, Curl was introduced to Boba, who at the time was a member of the breakbeat band Axcess, which lead to a remix courtesy of Axcess for his label ‘Free for a Girl’. However, it was during a summer break in Ibiza, that Curl, with his early house and progressive background was introduced by Boba to the sound of breaks. This introduction convinced them – whilst supping yet another cold San Miguel on their inflatable shark lilos – to blend their musical production styles, thus creating the Curl & Dean Sound.
Shortly thereafter, Big Square Records head-bearded-honcho (and one-time Hubie Sounds guest DJ) Big Nick D asked the lads to remix a Ben & Lex tune ‘Floorburn’, this was followed by a further release of their own ‘Kabul’ which featured an excellent Merka Remix on the flip. The original was also licensed on the V2 released compilation LP ‘Urban Deluxe’.
Their follow-up release was the rolling sounds of the ‘Snow Buddha’, also released on Big Square Records with remixes from Future Funk Squad & MI Loki. The success of the ‘Buddha was literally measured in inches, causing the snow to fall all over the U.K from release, this little beauty earned a number 1 spot in the DJ Download Beats & Breaks Chart, a DJ magazine recommendation & support from many, including Jay Cunning’s Kiss FM show.
The lads also had a tune, ‘Shining Path’, featured on the NSB Uncovered compilation, released towards the end of ’09 on Ape Records. As well as throwing their own parties around London town, Curl & Dean present their own radio show on IBreaks Radio. Their next release, ‘Bantha’ is out soon on Scarcity, with remixes from Beta, Run Riot, Mesmer, Deriwer & Ruido, the lads also have some remixes due for release soon on Scarcity and Yellow Finger.

Hey kids!
It’s that time of year again where the breakbeat community dusts off its best breakbeat tuxedo and prepares itself for a civilised evening of backslapping and japery at the annual Breakspoll International Breakbeat Awards. And I’m sure you all know what that means… it’s time for you to flex your voting muscles and vote for your favourite DJs, producers and so on!
Now I’m fairly sure you’ve already been inundated with spam from numerous hopefuls attempting to secure your votes, so we here at Hubie Sounds have decided to take the softly softly approach this year. So please treat this post as a gentle reminder to support your favourite artists, because the more of you who vote, the more fair and equal the voting will be.
I’m sure you already know who you want to vote for, but if you need any help with your votes, please read on and give your support to these friends of Hubie Sounds…
- BEST ALBUM: General Midi – Operation Overdrive
- BEST COMPILATION / MIX: NuSkoolBreaks.co.uk Presents Uncovered mixed by Ben & Lex
- BEST TRACK: General Midi ft. Whiskey Pete – Get It Down
- BEST REMIX: The Amplifetes – It’s My Life (General Midi Remix)
- BEST LABEL: Distinctive Records
- BEST PRODUCER: General Midi
- BEST RADIO STATION: NSB Radio
- BEST RADIO SHOW: vote for Hubie Sounds if you like, and a big thank you if you do! But may I suggest you vote for Ben & Lex’s Beats n Bobs show, which is also on NSB Radio. It’s a great show and it stands a brilliant chance of knocking Annie Nightingale off her best radio show perch this year!
>>>> Click HERE to vote! <<<<
Make sure you get your votes in as soon as poss, cos voting closes in a couple of weeks’ time!
Thanks for taking the time to vote and extra special thanks for your support, we really appreciate it!

‘Sup y’all! It’s that time of the year once again where everyone in the breaks scene spams the crap out of the internets in the hope of garnering enough votes to win the respect/envy of their peers and take home a small glass paperweight on the 26th of Feb at Fabric, here in London.
Yes that’s right, it’s time for another Breakspoll awards! And to prepare you all for this prestigious/drunken event, I’m going to present a Hubie Sounds Breakspoll Special this Saturday night. It’s gonna be a show of two halves:- the first hour will be devoted to a selection of my favourite breaks tunes of the last twelve months, and for the second hour I will be handing over the breakbeat reins to Breakspoll award hopeful and master of everything Exo-Funkadelic Mr No Hands who has given me a cracking mix to play for you.

For more info about Mr No Hands, check out his MySpace
Also make sure you check out his fantastic music videos on his Youtube channel
Hubie Sounds on Brap.FM, Saturday 7th February, 8-10pm GMT!

Ello Brappers
This week I will be putting a slightly different spin on my regular ‘Hubie’s Babies’ feature. Instead of focusing on a particular artist that’s currently tweaking my knobs, I will be focusing on a standout record label. This particular label has been a stalwart of the breaks scene for many years now but is nowadays casting its net broader than ever before with a slew of fidgety house releases to accompany its more usual breakbeat-oriented output. This label of course is the excellent Passenger Records. So if you like your house, breaks and bassy business, make sure you tune in for Hubie Would Like To Have Passenger Records‘ Babies 😉

www.myspace.com/passengerrecords
Of course I will also be spinning the usual housey, breakbeaty goodness you’re accustomed to hearing on Hubie Sounds, including cuts by the likes of Nick Thayer, Kraak & Smaak, Janette Slack & Plump DJs.
So I do hope you can tune in this Saturday night, 8-10pm BST on the one and only Brap.FM!
See you in the Brap Chatroom!
Check out my Radio Show page for further details
Hubie x
